What are Cataracts

The development of cataracts is a normal part of the aging process. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens inside the eye, which prevents light from focusing properly on the retina.

The result is blurred or out-of-focus vision, as well as the following symptoms:

  • Gradual blurring or hazy vision

  • Colors seem yellower

  • A tendency to become more nearsighted

  • Double vision in one eye only

  • A gradual loss of color vision

  • The feeling of having a film over the eyes

  • An increased sensitivity to glare, especially at night

When dealing with these symptoms become increasingly more difficult, and regular activities such as driving and reading are significantly impacted, it may be time to consider a cataract procedure.

The great news is that modern cataract surgery is highly successful. It can quickly restore vision and the downtime is also very minimal in most cases. Today, the surgery is an outpatient procedure, utilizing the state-of-the-art equipment. This allows for smaller, more precise incisions, unprecedented accuracy, and premier astigmatism management with NO needles and NO stitches.

A short-acting IV sedation and topical anesthesia are usually all that is necessary to keep the patient comfortable and pain-free during the surgery. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and most patients return to all normal activities by the next day.

With all of the benefits of modern cataract surgery, the decision seems simple, but choosing the right ophthalmology practice is important. At Cataract & Eye Consultants of Michigan, our surgeons have been successfully treating cataracts for more than 30 years. We were pioneers in Laser-assisted cataract surgery and continue to remain on the cutting edge of new procedures.

PREMIUM LENS IMPLANTS

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a small, fold-able lens that is inserted into the eye and replaces the natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. A monofocal lens will correct the vision at one distance. A multifocal lens can give a wide range of vision with usually very little need for glasses. Toric lenses are used to correct astigmatism and increase the chance that you will see clearly following surgery. Choosing your lens is a significant decision that will affect how you see every day for the rest of your life. Let us educate you and help you make the best decision.

Not everyone is a good candidate for the lens they desire or the one that a friend or family member recommended. Advanced diagnostic testing will be performed to determine if there are any irregularities in your cornea or retina. These advanced measurements are critical in helping us prepare your treatment plan. Once we understand your visual goals, a specific recommendation will be made on the type of lens that will result in the best visual outcome for you.

We offer all of the currently available premium lens options for cataract surgery. Schedule a consultation with one of our doctors to find out if you are a good candidate. These lenses will generally result in less dependence on glasses after cataract surgery.
