The development of cataracts is a normal part of the aging process. In fact, it’s one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over the age of 55. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens inside the eye which will prevent light from focusing properly on the retina. The result is blurred or out-of-focus vision, as well as the following symptoms:
- Gradual blurring or hazy vision
- Colors seem yellower
- A tendency to become more nearsighted
- Double vision in one eye only
- A gradual loss of color vision
- The feeling of having a film over the eyes
- An increased sensitivity to glare, especially at night
The great news is that modern cataract surgery is highly successful. It can quickly restore vision and the downtime is also very minimal in most cases. Today, the surgery is an outpatient procedure, utilizing the state-of-the-art LenSx® laser. The laser allows for smaller, more precise incisions, unprecedented accuracy and premier astigmatism management with no needle and no stitches.
Cataract surgery is so successful because of theses innovative techniques and instruments. Using phacoemulsification, a small ultrasonic probe breaks the cataract into very tiny pieces allowing it to be gently vacuumed from the eye. A short acting IV sedation and topical anesthesia are usually all that is necessary to keep the patient comfortable and pain free during the surgery.
The procedure only takes a few minutes, and most patients return to all normal activities by the next day. Vision should be more clear and crisp following the surgery. With all of the benefits of modern cataract surgery, the decision seems simple, but choosing the right ophthalmology practice is important. At Cataract & Eye Consultants of Michigan, our surgeons have been successfully treating cataracts for more than 30 years. We are committed to the most advanced treatment available, which today means the LenSx laser. We look forward to discussing all of your treatment options with you.
